Dr. Swanson received an M.D. from the Stanford University School of Medicine, and in 1984 became the first woman ever to complete general surgery residency at the University of Virginia. She went on to become one of the very first women to complete plastic surgery residency at New York University before returning to Southern California in 1990 as a highly trained woman plastic surgery specialist.  Dr. Swanson is certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.  Her affiliations include Fellow, American College of Surgeons (ACS), American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons (ASBPS).
