Brazilian Butt Lift Q & A

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

If your butt is lacking fullness but other areas of your body have extra, Dr. Swanson liposuctions the fat and inserts it into your buttocks. This figure-enhancing procedure can accentuate the contours of your backside dramatically.

Dr. Swanson can suction the excess fat from your:

  • Flanks
  • Thighs
  • Back
  • Abdomen

In some cases, she can also remove fat from your upper arms.

Dr. Swanson performs the procedure using general anesthesia, and the surgery can take 1-3 hours, depending on the number of areas that need liposuction. The procedure does require incisions, but Dr. Swanson is careful to make each incision in the natural creases of your skin or in locations covered by your clothing. Most incisions are very small and heal well so they are barely visible.

How long do the results of a Brazilian butt lift last?

The fat cells that survive the transfer and develop a new blood supply are permanent and will not go away. However, not all fat cells will survive the transfer.

You can expect to see optimal results within three months of surgery, but it’s important that you follow all of Dr. Swanson’s post-operative instructions to protect transferred fat cells.

How long does recovery take after a Brazilian butt lift?

Following surgery, you may experience bruising and swelling in the areas where Dr. Swanson has liposuctioned the fat. You wear a compression garment in those areas for at least eight weeks for proper healing and to minimize swelling.

To avoid killing the fat grafts before they can settle, you won’t wear a compression garment on your buttocks. However, you must avoid sitting on your backside for at least eight weeks. Dr. Swanson offers guidance for using inflatable pillows and adjusting your sleeping position to prevent pressure on the surgical area that can affect the circulation of blood to the new fat grafts.

After the eight weeks of recovery, you should be able to return to your normal activities, and Dr. Swanson continues to monitor your limitations as your healing progresses. You should continue to avoid sitting for long periods of time to ensure optimal results.
